Berks County man takes a shot at golf business
By David A. Kostival
Reading Eagle Correspondent

A teacher spends his downtime in the summer installing synthetic-turf putting greens for a variety of customers.

Berks County, PA - As a teacher, librarian and assistant varsity football coach at Wilson High School, Chad Brubaker, 34, wanted to find a seasonal business he could operate during the summer breaks from the school year.

When he came across artificial-turf putting greens, he realized this was a niche summer business which had not really been introduced in Berks County.

“This is something which is very popular in other parts of the country and is very unique,” Brubaker said. “In some areas of the country such as Arizona, almost everyone has artificial turf installed in their yards.

“But this is something that is very marketable around here as well.”

Brubaker became a dealer and a trained installer with Mirage Putting Greens International, Inc., Las Vegas, in 2005.

There are Mirage dealers in York and Allentown, but Brubaker, working as an independent dealer, has bought the exclusive rights to market the product in Berks County under the name Central PA Putting Greens Inc.

“It’s basically a standard installation with a stone sub-base,” Brubaker said. “It’s similar to installing a patio, except you don’t have to have a completely level area. You can sculpt the artificial turf on top of existing terrains for more challenging putting areas.”

Brubaker said the turf doesn’t necessarily have to be used as a putting green, but can be used to landscape around a pool or to replace grass areas for a maintenance-free lawn.

The average cost for installation is $12 to $15 per square foot.

Brubaker recently installed a six-hole putting course at the Highlands at Wyomissing which includes three tiers of putting greens and two chipping pads.

But Brubaker stressed that he and the Mirage company are not necessarily marketing the product to high-end golfers.

“We try to market this to families whose kids like golf,” he said. “This is affordable and having a putting green in your yard could become as popular as having a basketball net in the driveway.”

In the spring, Brubaker was contracted by 1220 Exhibits, Inc., Nashville, Tenn., to complete a replica of the famous 18th green at Oakmont (Allegheny County) Country Club, the site of the 2007 U.S. Open, as the main feature in the United States Golf Association-American Express corporate tent there.

“That project was completed over a three-day period in preparation for the U.S. Open,” he said.

Brubaker said he has gone through a valuable learning process about owning a business.

“I’ve been learning a lot about the marketing end and the business end of having a business,” Brubaker said. “But it’s not that easy because you end up having to make decisions that will end up costing you money if you are not successful.”

Brubaker estimated that he had to make an initial investment of between $20,000 and $25,000 to start the business.

While most of the work is done on-site, Brubaker stores his inventory in the garage of his home in Spring Township.

As a teacher, Brubaker said, he has to be concerned about becoming too successful since he has to do most of his installations during the summer.

“I really like what I do at school, so I have to dictate how much the business grows,” he said.

Brubaker said Mirage is a very innovative company which also is geared toward being an outdoor concepts business.

He said Mirage is working on marketing outdoor all-weather plasma televisions and pool tables.

Rain or shine

From our news staff (Reading Eagle) - 7/30/2006

So you're engrossed in a baseball game on television, but you promised your wife you'd grill up some burgers for that evening's cookout.
You can't drag your 32-inch plasma TV outside, but you also don't want to drag your marriage through the mud.

What to do?

Simple go outside, fire up the grill and turn on your all-weather outdoor television.

Indeed, not only have televisions seeped their way into restaurants, dentists offices and banks, now they're even in our backyards.

Mirage Outdoor Concepts of Scottsdale, Ariz., has designed an all-weather, flat-panel, LCD television set, which features an aluminum, weather-resistant casing.

“It's kind of like a satellite television,” said Chad R. Brubaker, president of Central PA Putting Greens Inc. in Spring Township, an authorized dealer for Mirage. “It has a sun sensor, like a photo sensor, which automatically adjusts brightness as to how the sun is shining.”

Brubaker said the MirageVision television sets, which are available in 27-inch and 32-inch models, cost between $3,000 and $5,000. He said the company shows off the sets at trade shows by putting them in a bathtub and running a shower on them.

Brubaker has yet to sell any of the televisions, as he is focusing on marketing synthetic putting greens, but plans to do a few home shows in the next year.

His business, which opened in late 2005, also sells all-weather pool tables and waterfall ponds.
